Explore five secluded beaches on an ATV ride through the tropical dry forest of La Cruz, with stops for coastal views and swimming in calm, clear water.

Ride an ATV along the coast of La Cruz in Guanacaste's far north, a quiet stretch of shoreline close to the Nicaraguan border. Starting from El Jobo, a certified local guide leads the route through five beaches: Playa Coyotera, Playa El Jobo, Playa Pilas, Playa Rajada and Playa Rajadita.

The trail runs through tropical dry forest between the bays, with stops at lookout points above the coast. You'll have time to swim in the calm, clear water at the beaches along the way, and your guide points out the plants and wildlife of the area as you go.

Bottled water and fresh fruit are served during the ride. It suits travelers who want an active day away from the busier beaches of the Gold Coast.

Around twelve years in Costa Rican tourism. On the drive between Guanacaste and Arenal he points out how fast the landscape and climate change, and shares the history of both regions along the way. His picks: the Palo Verde boat safari and Rincón de la Vieja's Pailas trail.

  • Kevin Arias, Naturalist Guide at Puma Expeditions

    Kevin Arias

    Naturalist Guide · ES, EN

Twenty years guiding Costa Rica as a general and naturalist guide, with a special passion for botany: he points out plant adaptations, ecological relationships and the quiet work that trees, flowers and lianas do in the ecosystem. His favorite day is Palo Verde, where wildlife, tropical wetlands, cultural traditions and history meet — and the birdlife is spectacular.

Twenty-two years in tourism, from restaurants to tour sales to driving and guiding. Místico is his favorite trail: rich in wildlife, easy to walk, and full of the forest's secrets. On transfers north he loves the moment the dry Pacific crosses an invisible line into rainforest green.
