Hike the hanging bridges, swim at La Fortuna Waterfall, and explore Arenal Volcano’s lava trails in a single active day, with a traditional Costa Rican lunch included.

Spend a full day on foot through three of La Fortuna's most iconic landscapes. Begin at the hanging bridges, a 3-kilometer (2-mile) circuit through the rainforest that crosses 10 fixed and 6 hanging bridges at varying heights. The trail is paved with slip-resistant concrete, lined with safety railings, and has no stairs, making it easy to focus on the flora and fauna around you as your guide points out wildlife along the way.

Continue to La Fortuna Waterfall, where a 15-minute trail leads down to the base of the falls. Take a swim in the cool water or simply relax and enjoy the scenery. A traditional Costa Rican lunch follows at La Finquita Restaurant, with time to rest before the afternoon hike.

The day ends on the Arenal Volcano trails, which cross rainforest and the solidified lava flows from the 1968 eruption. Discover native plants, wildlife, and striking rock formations, with views over Lake Arenal from the top of the trail. The route finishes at an observation point where, on clear days, you can see steam rising from small vents near the volcano's peak. Ideal for active travelers and hiking enthusiasts, this experience covers rainforest, waterfall, and volcano in a single day.

    Driver Guide · ES, EN

Around twelve years in Costa Rican tourism. On the drive between Guanacaste and Arenal he points out how fast the landscape and climate change, and shares the history of both regions along the way. His picks: the Palo Verde boat safari and Rincón de la Vieja's Pailas trail.

  • Kevin Arias, Naturalist Guide at Puma Expeditions

    Kevin Arias

    Naturalist Guide · ES, EN

Twenty years guiding Costa Rica as a general and naturalist guide, with a special passion for botany: he points out plant adaptations, ecological relationships and the quiet work that trees, flowers and lianas do in the ecosystem. His favorite day is Palo Verde, where wildlife, tropical wetlands, cultural traditions and history meet — and the birdlife is spectacular.

  • Ronny Bonilla, Driver Guide at Puma Expeditions

    Ronny Bonilla

    Driver Guide · ES, EN

Twenty-two years in tourism, from restaurants to tour sales to driving and guiding. Místico is his favorite trail: rich in wildlife, easy to walk, and full of the forest's secrets. On transfers north he loves the moment the dry Pacific crosses an invisible line into rainforest green.
